About KR

The pronunciation of “Kan” in Chinese is “Zhan” (旃; 詹), which means “red flags”. Zhan-Jing (旃旌) means “red army flags”. Kandala (also Candala), which is pronounced “Zhan-Tuo-Luo” (旃陀羅) in Chinese, is the name of pariahs in Hinduism. It is even expelled from the famous four orders of caste: Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra. Kandala means “the untouchable”, a radical other. Mindless words or translations might be taken seriously, so we wonder whether “Kan-dala” means that someday the rejected pariahs would hold red flags aloft.
As for Kandala Records (旃陀羅唱片), of course it doesn’t come from ancient India, but contemporary Taiwan. Yet, it is not true for saying this because it is so far impossible to see any store where signboards have the word “Kandala” in Taiwan. However, finding it on the Internet will be easy in the future. Therefore, KR is not so much from “contemporary Taiwan” as “contemporary”. KR exists in Internet cables, phone cords, hard discs in mainframes, emails, sound waves, amplitudes on the screens, communication software, and countless invisible electromagnetic waves everywhere. In brief, Kandala Records is a "semi-substantial" sound label.
We mainly release sound works. If you must label them, styles such as improvisation, noise, psychedelic, avant-garde/experimental, and field recordings would be probably applicable. We welcome players, musicians, and artists all over the world and a variety of IDs on the Internet to release works here. The premise: you have to agree on letting your works downloadable for free. An abject group doesn’t need any pay because the way to revolution for it is having itself diffuse to every hard disc and occupy every computer as soon as possible and then capture people’s minds and paralyze the caste of music. It doesn’t prevent us from releasing substantial CDs and selling them hereafter, so long as the stuff can bring people delights, wonders, confusion, and power.
Here come the aims of Kandala Records. First, it is a medium which offers a place to release and promote the works of artists playing sounds such as improvisation, noise, psychedelic, avant-garde/experimental, and filed recordings. Second, because of gathering these kinds of artists it is a witness showing that these sounds have existed all the time and many people are indulged in producing them, so they are worth knowing. Third, it makes two interventions both into the underground music scene in Taiwan where rock n’ roll has been in power and the sound art that has been kidnapped by academicism. KR will have a turf in these two fields.
